HISTORY

Aromatherapy is one of the most popular complementary therapies in the 21st Century.

The elements of Aromatherapy is used in a holistic way by the pleasant smells which have psychological effects.

It is not just the essential oils that aid the healing of mind, body and spirit, this comes with the complete treatment.

What a treatment entails:

Assessement

Treatment specific to your healing

Follow-up

Holistic Aromatherapy as we know it today was introduced by Marguerite Maury, a French Biochemist and Beautician. She quoted:

The greatest interest is the effect of fragrance on the psyche and mental state of the individual. Powers of perceptions become clearer and more accurate and there is a feeling of having, to a certain extent, outstripped events. They are seen more objectively, and therefore in truer perspective.

Massage of the conjunctive, neuromuscular or soft tissues pave the way admirably for the penetration of odoriferous substances, and the resultant rejuvenation. It is therefore clear that preparations with a basis of essential oils with vegetable oils used a s carriers, will be of great assistance.

Essential oils reawaken odour awareness and the connection to individuality, and greater independence improves the ability to take responsibility for ones own health. Self confidence and wellbeing are influenced, providing an improved flow of biological information through the psychosomatic network of body and mind.

Aromatherapy is a lifestyle and essential oils are a catalyst for
change. I use them as an addition to my life and they enhance
everything I do. In this section I have presented a few ways that you
can enhance your life with aromatherapy.

The Power of Odor Association

Odor association can play an important role in our personal performance. It can inhibit or assist our creativity, focus, productivity and wellbeing, literally within seconds. Japan has been actively researching the effects of odor against human performance since the 70's, developing innovative projects that have received world recognition within the Fragrance industry.

The Takasago fragrance company; worked with the Shimizu Corporation to develop a sophisticated air conditioning system that works on a pre-timed scent plan. Based on the research of Professor Tori; brain wave activity in response to odorants; employees began to work within an changing fragrant environment. The scent of Lemon had been shown to dramatically stimulate their office computer operators, reporting a 50% increase in productivity and decrease in work error. The fragrances released are so subtle that they are virtually subliminal; which further supports the Aromatherapy guidelines for use: less is best.

Given that we can currently spend far more waking hours at work than at home, it is crucial to our health and well being that we nurture our body, mind and spirit in the process. Environmental fragrancing with pure essential oils can be achieved easily with a portable Aromatherapy vaporizer (also called a burner). Essential oils can help purify the air we breathe; focus our thoughts can help us remain active, alert and refreshed. Basil, Lemon, Lime and Rosemary is a fabulous combination for successful productivity.

From time immemorial

Since time immemorial, human beings have turned to nature to heal and adorn their bodies, to soothe and tend the mind and emotions and to ultimately uplift, purify and sanctify the spirit. Today we continue the practices of our forefathers; as we embrace the healing tools of Aromatherapy; plant extracts known as essential oils.

Every essential oil is unique and potent; a catalyst for change; capable of altering the way we feel and think with the beat of our heart. No wonder science continues to explore their boundaries, in the pursuit to understand the profound effect that they have on our body, mind and spirit. It has always been easy for humankind to surrender into the fragrant arms of Mother Nature - who constantly satiates our senses; yet now more than ever before human beings are turning to Aromatherapy to assist them to reconnect with the essence of their existence. Fragrance again, pursued for its individuality, is being sought to empower oneself, lift one's self esteem and confidence and to ultimately assist us to make meaning of our existence.

Blending is the essential practice of Aromatherapy. The liquid extracts from blossoms, fruits, woods, gums, resins and flowers can be combined to create infinite combinations of blends that can be massaged into the skin, vaporized into the air or simply bathed in. Only a precious drop or two of the chosen oils are required for any method of use. Less is best. Rose essential oil, healer of the heart and emotions, was used by Cleopatra to woo Mark Anthony, she could be smelt coming down the Nile. The wood, oars and sails of the barge she sailed in, were impregnated with pure Rose oil. Cedarwood, said to preserve all that it contains, was used extensively in the embalming process, these two when combined with the essence of Frankincense and Myrrh create a superb blend to center yourself during times of contemplation, reflection and meditation.

If it’s true that we only do in life what we are successful at, then when did we last take a moment to examine exactly what we are doing? Where do we spend most of our time, and with whom?

What are our personal measures of success? It is good to identify all the components that assist us to feel successful.

I’m certain that the answers to these questions have something to do with our personal values. Identifying values is easy, they are the things that we are most passionate about, they can motivate us to stand for them or fight for them; some examples are, honesty, health, relationships or love. Whether we inherited our values from our parents, or took them on from role models or mentors, our values make up the fabric of our identity and ultimately determine the choices we make.

For many years now I have contemplated the above, in an attempt to make meaning of my existence, exploring the boundaries of my behaviors, beliefs and rules that of course stem from my own values.

Aromatherapy has remained a vital component of this contemplative process; for I have utilized essential oils as catalysts to initiate, stimulate and activate change in my perspective and reflective processes.

For many years I worked on strengthening my weaknesses, a challenging process indeed.

I used my essential oils to help me combat the challenges during this time and to help me shift from those stagnant moments of doubt, self pity, frustration and anger. They helped me survive in life and shift my focus onto more generative thoughts and actions.

I realise now that in fact the oils assisted me to keep redirecting my thoughts towards my strengths, whilst nurturing my wellbeing.

These days I focus on building my strengths, doing more of what I feel successful at. The challenges remain and so too do the emotions and my ever faithful essential oils.

Rosemary to promote recall and help me retain information, Basil to assist my decision making process and Eucalyptus to oxygenate and re-energize my body. Peppermint and Lime keep me motivated through the midnight to dawn shifts and Lavender helps me rest and recover.

In fact my essential oils help me thrive rather than survive.

Tip:

Add 1 drop of 3 different essential oils onto a handkerchief and place it into your pocket, Anytime during the day that you become adamant or inflexible take out your handkerchief no matter where you are and take a moment to breath deeply through your nostrils. If you are with someone else, they will probably think that you are about to sneeze or something. Use this ‘pause’ to take in the power of the oils to initiate change.

Colour Therapy and Aromatherapy

Colour Therapy has been used in temples in Chine, India, Greece and Egypt for healing purposes.

Utilising the vibrational frequency of the colours to the spectrum will help balance and harmonise the body. Colours are powerful and have positive effects on our emotions. They are linked to the Chakra system and helps activate this system. Each chakra resonates in harmony to a specific colour. By using colour, Chakras can become stimulated and energised with the vibration to restore harmony and balance.

Aromatherapy and colour therapy can act in synergy. Essential oils and colour can recharge the aura and cleanse negative vibrations. All essential oils have their own colour vibration, to resonate at the same frequencies of the colour you wish to treat; you can blend a harmonious mix of essential oils.
